Final Tips to Get Your Garden Ready for Winter

Alberta is an amazing province to live in but perhaps the biggest challenge is the weather and this Fall has lived up to our reputation for uncertain weather. Here at Landscape Plus we have been busy blowing out irrigation systems, putting the finishing touches on landscape projects while purchasing salt, shovels, ice scrapers and checking our snow removal equipment all in preparation for the upcoming winter.

There are a few things you can also do before that first big freeze.

1. It is a really good idea to give a deep watering to all the trees and shrubs before the ground freezes. It is better for the ground to freeze wet than dry. The most susceptible part of the plant to cold temps is the roots. So if the ground is frozen wet it is a consistent temperature all winter.

Hardscape & Softscape: What is the difference?

There is a lot to consider when it comes to landscaping your commercial or residential property. Ideally, a well-designed landscape incorporates a balance between the hardscape and softscape & that both elements are proportionate to the property size. So what exactly does each entail?

Hardscape is the structural, heavy-duty aspects of landscaping. Decisions will be around shape, foundation and drainage system of the yard. This usually entails hard materials such as concrete, bricks, and stone which makes it the more expensive part of your budget. It is also more permanent than soft landscaping and requires hiring a professional with the right experience and equipment to put everything in place.

Landscaping Your Acreage

No matter how many acres are in play you need to start with a game plan; a landscape design that can be phased in over several years. This upfront cost will save time and money long term as well as the frustrations that can come with having so much ‘space’ to work with.

A professional landscape design provides a visual that takes away the feeling of being overwhelmed. Many landowners initially think that they have to “fill in” all the space their rural property is providing. The owner needs to see how space is allocated for gardens, outbuildings, windbreaks plus the elements and features that will enable them to personalize their acreage. How the functional will merge with aesthetics.

Lifestyle zones should also be included; a professional design will ensure the right flow and look of specifically designated areas. Some owners see their acreage as an opportunity to implement an orchard or complete vegetable garden as part of your design plan. Perhaps a  designated area so a favourite flower can be highlighted with all its different varieties and colours.

What are the benefits of an Irrigation System?

Do you know the benefits of an irrigation system? A healthy sustainable landscape, no more over or under watering, increased curb appeal and property value are just some of the reasons people decide to have an Irrigation System installed.

A well designed system will met the needs of your grass and plant zones plus take into account the sunny vs shady areas. A timer system means one less thing on your to-do list and it can be set to be in compliance if water restrictions are in effect in your area.

You invest a lot of time and money in plants, grass, shrubs and trees so it is important they stay healthy and flourishing from season to season.  As the system will be specifically designed for areas that truly need water this limits potential weed growth. Also your soil structure is preserved and plants absorb nutrients, not the runoff water. Continue reading “What are the benefits of an Irrigation System?”
