Landscaping

No matter how many acres are in play you need to start with a game plan; a landscape design that can be phased in over several years. This upfront cost will save time and money long term as well as the frustrations that can come with having so much ‘space’ to work with.

A professional landscape design provides a visual that takes away the feeling of being overwhelmed. Many landowners initially think that they have to “fill in” all the space their rural property is providing. The owner needs to see how space is allocated for gardens, outbuildings, windbreaks plus the elements and features that will enable them to personalize their acreage. How the functional will merge with aesthetics.

Lifestyle zones should also be included; a professional design will ensure the right flow and look of specifically designated areas. Some owners see their acreage as an opportunity to implement an orchard or complete vegetable garden as part of your design plan. Perhaps a  designated area so a favourite flower can be highlighted with all its different varieties and colours.

Naturalness is crucial it’s better to use curves rather than straight lines as the effect with be more natural. Paths, retaining walls, borders and bed should flow with the landscape contours. And if possible enhance natural water bodies that are already on the land.

Planting on a new acreage should start with the shelterbelts, then trees, ornamental shrubs.

Planting shelter belts help to reduce the wind, collect snow for moisture, can help to keep the house with moderate temp in summer and winter. Spring is a great time as trees can be purchased as bare root (not potted with soil) and are very reasonable when planting hundreds. Having a drip system to water each of the trees is a great way to ensure successful growth.

Flower bed outlines should be sited so that the mower can make the curves without having to go back with a weed eater.

Hardy trees specific for acreages can be listed so semi-hardy trees aren’t planted and need to be replaced the following year. Planting trees in groups with bark mulch make it easier to mow and the bark helps to retain the moisture and reduce weeds.

Grass varieties are important to pay attention too. There are varieties that don’t require as much water and don’t grow as tall or fast so mowing is reduced.

Native plants should also be considered as they offer a more natural look to the landscape.
